Camp Tahquitz - National Orienteering Week!
September 11, 2016
Sunday
Celebrate National Orienteering Week with forest orienteering for all. Open pine forest, an intricate trail network, and camp structures make Tahquitz Boy Scout camp an excellent challenge for every level. We'll have beginner courses and instruction, along with the technical, open running that experienced members crave.
Course Setter's Notes:
Trail Network - Camp Tahquitz is a highly developed property. As such it includes many small trails leading in and out of camp areas. I've done my best to update the map to support this year's courses, but it's far from a complete re-field check. There are likely to be many unmapped smaller trails. In addition, since the last time we used Tahquitz they have installed a pedestrian bridge over the highway. This means that new trails have been made leading to the bridge and trails leading to the old road crossings have been mostly purposefully obliterated. Also, a few years ago some mountain bike trails were added to the map. These are mostly now in disuse and faded away. But some are still used enough to remain on the map as small footpaths or indistinct trails.
The Bridge - Orange and Expert courses cross the bridge. A control has been placed at the bridge to force this route choice. You will punch this control twice - each time you cross the bridge. The highway is out-of-bounds. Please do not cross except at the bridge and if you wish to follow the highway as a handrail, do so a safe distance away in the woods and not on the pavement shoulder.
Water - Water will be placed at the bridge control for the longer courses.
Meadows - Note that the two large meadows on the map are covered with black stripes, indicating that they are out-of-bounds. Please do not cross through the meadows. Find routes that go around.
Foxtails - Be prepared for lots of foxtails. I stopped a number of times while tagging to pull foxtails out of my socks.
