Course Setting Workshop Well Attended

Puzzling out Orange legs

Saturday, Oct 5th, was a blustery day, but there was no bluster at the LAOC course setting workshop. Troy NJROTC hosted the gathering of 17 curious orienteers, some who have not yet joined one of our treks, and some who teach orienteering to their private school students. Instructor, Sue D., presented the foundations for good course design at each technical level. Participants studied previous White, Yellow, and Orange course designs, as well as created their own. We finished our time with a demo of Condes, a course setting software application LAOC uses. Volunteers were found to develop the new Fullerton Urban O map into a course, and for new course designs at Mile Square Park as well. A new mapping volunteer was discovered!

Course setting is something you only get good at through practice. Here are three ideas for continuing to build your skills:
1. Use your event maps to design your own courses. Sue will be happy to provide feedback, either scan them and email them to her, or bring them to an event.
2. Sign up to help a Course Setter for an event. Go with them for the field checking, you'll see how they can modify the design on the fly as needed.
3. Talk to the Course Setters after your run at events. Ask them questions, and thank them for their service to the club!
