Echo Park Urban O

October 27, 2013
Sunday

Come join us at Elysian Park for a day of Score-O. The park, historic streets, and the hills of Echo Park will be the backdrop for this event. And with Halloween just days away, the quaint homes and cottages of the area will sure to be decorated with ghoulish delight.

The course consists of controls scattered throughout the area, and each control is worth a certain number of points based, hopefully, on navigational difficulty. You may visit them in any order. Your arrival at each control will be verified by answering the multiple choice question correctly. Penalty points will be given for wrong answers or exceeding your selected time limit.

Exciting news for those of you who have done this course before with the reopening of the newly refurbished Echo Park Lake, a new area has opened up with new controls, new questions, and new route choices.

Adults may run in groups or as individuals. People under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs are also welcome, but must be kept on a leash, and all traffic laws must be obeyed.

It is vital you return your clue sheet in intact at the finish so your score can be accurately calculated. DO NOT LOSE YOUR CLUE SHEET. YOU MUST TURN IT IN BEFORE YOU LEAVE FOR HOME. Please remember to check back at the start/finish before leaving for the day.
The Map
The map, a combination of the USGS contour map and Google map, has been divided into four Zones, Green, Lilac, Coral, and Golden. The start area is halfway up Chavez Ravine in the Green Zone with gentle elevation changes along the center of the canyon. The Green Zone covers Elysium Park and the Bishop Canyon Picnic Area, and contains the areas of highest elevations. The Echo Park neighborhood is, where you will find the Golden Zone. This zone is divided by four sharp ridges. The area along Sunset Blvd and Echo Park Dr is the Coral Zone. It is fairly flat with several streets following gentle reentrants down to Echo Park Lake. Angeleno Heights south of Sunset is in the Lilac Zone.consists of a low rounded hill with south-facing reentrants. Elevation change goes from 400 feet to 750 feet. The furthest control from the start is approximately 1.6 km away, as the crow flies, but route choice will be important to avoid steep climbs.
