Mt Pinos DIY Orienteering

June 28 - July 12, 2020
Sunday - Sunday

Do-It-Yourself orienteering classic courses are now available at Mt. Pinos and will remain until further notice.

UPDATE 7/7: I visited today and replaced streamers at 39, 42, and 51. Streamers 45 and 47 were in place. The following streamers I did not visit, so they may still be missing.
#33 (Yellow) - possibly missing
#48 (Orange) - possibly missing

UPDATE 6/20: Streamer #40 has been replaced. Streamer #51 is reported ripped, but hopefully will be replaced soon.

UPDATE 6/14: Streamer #40 is reported missing. This affects Yellow, Orange, and Red courses. You should still navigate to that spot, but don't spend time looking for the streamer.

The controls are marked with pink streamers. Each streamer has "LAOC" and the control number written on it. Streamers are likely to disappear over time. Sometimes animals destroy them. Please report any missing or damaged streamers so we can list them here for others.

Upon registering and accepting the waiver, you will be emailed a link to the map file. This is a single PDF which contains all of the courses. You must print your own map. Maps are designed to print at 1:10,000 scale and fit on letter sized paper. The legend on the map is cut off. Control descriptions are printed on the map.

Start and Finish are at the Nordic Base parking lot at the end of the road up on Mt. Pinos. Please time yourself. There is nothing to punch, just streamers to find. You are on the honor system to report your fair result. If you run a second course or go back for a rerun, you can note this as a comment when submitting your result.

Mt. Pinos is one of our most technical areas. It is also remote. The courses are challenging both technically and physically (lots of climb!). Please choose a course that is suitable for your experience level. This event is not recommended for first-timers. A White (Basic) course is not offered.
The courses are at high elevation which can lead to dehydration. Bring plenty of water with you. There is no water placed on the course and there is no water available on the mountain.
Cell phone service is unreliable on this map. We recommend that you bring a buddy who will know if you finished safely. If you go alone, please make sure someone knows when to expect you home and has a copy of the map.
