Tahquitz

October 1, 2017
Sunday

First COOL event of the 2017-2018 season! Start off the new season right with some true forest orienteering. High quality, runnable alpine terrain with plenty of trails and camp features make this a great venue for beginners and experienced orienteers alike.

All COOL events are open to both our league members and the general public.

The assembly/registration area will be at the usual spot (south of highway; follow signs after turning right onto the access road). Start and Finish will be very close to the registration area.

Please back into your parking spot for safety reasons.

From the 10 fwy South in Redlands, exit Orange street and turn left. Head North to E. Lugonia Ave and turn right. This will become Mentone Blvd and then Mill Creek Rd. It is also highway 38. Follow this road, stay to the left at the Mill Creek Ranger Station, all the way past Angelus Oaks. Camp Tahquitz is about 6 miles past Angelus Oaks. Camp Tahquitz is on the right just past Jenks Lake Rd. Turn Right onto a road leading into camp all the way to the top where you will find the parking area. Please park facing out.
Course Setter Notes
If you’ve attended a previous orienteering event at Tahquitz, you are likely aware of the extensive trail network around the camp. The trail network is great for White and Yellow courses, but it offers a challenge for setting advanced courses. The advanced courses for the 2017 event include a few control clusters in which splits should be fast, and runners on these courses will experience many directional changes. Advanced runners should also plan on finding a few more controls than are typically placed for courses of these lengths.

Orange and advanced courses will have at least one control with drinking water. No water will be available on the White and Yellow courses.

Highway 38 bisects the camp from east to west and is considered out of bounds. Please do not cross the highway on foot unless there is an emergency. Courses were designed so that runners can use a footbridge to safely cross the highway.

Please check back for additional updates.
