    The Event
Mt. Pinos is LAOC's premier summer event. Two days of classic orienteering with relaxed camping under the stars and pine trees On Saturday afternoon there will be a very special O-training event, followed by stories around the campfires.

Terrain is nice runnable pine forest, with some steep hills and a good number of rock features. Mt Pinos is up at high altitude (8000 ft), so even in the hot June of LA it's nice and cool up there. We hope most of you join us camping, but there are also motels near I-5, about 20 miles away. Bring warm blankets as we expect the temperatures at night to be chilly. We will have some great campfires though. Bring wood and snacks to share.

On Saturday afternoon we will have a very special training session given by Clare Durand and myself to help everyone improve, maybe go up a level. Be sure to stay for this. Begnners and Advanced, we can always improve. I have thought of calling it "Getting out of the re-entrant of doom" but Clare is more cheerful.

    The Courses
7 courses White thru Blue, plus Long Orange on both days. ePunch will be used on all. Standards are high, as are the full color maps. Some new areas of the map will be used on day 2.
Joel and Bridget Thomson are setting the courses. Be sure to read their very detailed Course Setter's notes to the very end. They are very important for your enjoyment and for your safety. Also pay attention to the Safety Box below, remember to choose an appropriate course, wear your whistle and a watch, then have a good time.
Contact Joel about pre-running a course.

  • SPECIAL SAFETY for Mt Pinos - Whistles, Watch and Water

Due to the remoteness of the mountain, every individual or team out on the course must carry a safety Whistle (3 short blasts to summon help, do not use otherwise). You must also carry a WristWatch and report back within your 3hour limit or by 2.30pm whichever is earliest. Another 'W' is Water Be sure to hydrate well, due to elevation and dry air. No water available on the mountain, you must bring your own water. Supplies are available in Frazier Park just as you leave the freeway. We will have water on the courses as usual.

Don't choose a course based on length! Base it on your abilities of navigation. Mt Pinos is truly a navigational challenge - and you will enjoy it. So WATCH your MAP, take extra care to knowing where you are.(see MapReading) If you get lost, STAY where you are or follow the safety bearing. Now is the time to review your techniques, before coming on the mountain. Parents, be sure to shadow your child if they are out alone on a course
